Many race directors use USATF to gain insurance for their event.
Most clubs carry their own insurance and will not pay the extra $$ to USATF to get an 'official certification'.
USATF certified can mean a lot or it can mean very little, there is no guarantee or accuracy over and above what a club can offer.
Reply: USATF insurance is more often referred to as 'sanctioning'. I say this because it gets confused w/certification which has to do w/course measurement. If an event claims certification, the course has been measured according to USATF standards. Certification means a LOT and 'very little' isn't part of the equation. There is every human assurance of accuracy and is dependent on the ability of the person that measured the course. The good news is that very few courses fail to pass a validation measurement to check accuracy either before or after the fact.
