Though many could disagree--and not many consider it a classic movie--"Pulp Fiction" has a wonderful script. A very worthy Oscar winner. (I just re-saw it on YouTube and appreciated it even more than when I saw it on its first run.)
A movie that I personally find puzzling is "Shawshank Redemption." Many consider it a true classic. I think it was a good movie--not "utter rubbish"--but by no means an all-time great.
Similarly, though--being of Scottish extraction--I thoroughly enjoyed much of "Train Spotting" (especially this:

I could be wrong, too. There's no disputing tastes.
I consider "Pulp Fiction" to be a well-deserved "classic." In fact, I think of it as the great landmark film of the 1990s. And I agree that it has a wonderful script.
I also agree with your reservations about "Shawshank Redemption," although my own assessment would be harsher. I can understand some of its mass appeal, but I don't understand its critical appeal. In fact, I honestly find much of it to be achingly bad. The only reason that I was reluctant to mention it was that so many people think that its virtues are beyond dispute.
