Does it matter to you at all? Do you prefer one over the other or is there really not a huge difference at all?
I run in cotton socks. I'm curious as to what you guys think

i like performance socks.. cotton socks make my feet too warm
I go threw socks too quick to pay 20 bucks for a pair. I go with hanes, and am fine, no blisters unless I run in the rain.
Running for an hour or two in cotton socks is fine. I save the "performance socks" (smartwool) for hiking/backpacking where I'm on the move for 12+ hours a day.
Cotton socks are cheap and a good auxiliary toilet paper. I'm not going to wipe myself with for a pair of socks worth over $10.

What a wonderful contribution.
I wear merino wool -- thin, light and don't absorb sweat like cotton and I never get blisters with them.
I've been fairly happy with synthetic (cotton seemed to give me more blisters) Champion brand from Target. Cheap, durable, and get the job done
I haven't worn cotton socks in years. The high tech materials are warmer in winter and retain less sweat (and weight) in the summer.
my experience is the material is less important than the fit of the sock.
I just wore whatever I could get my hands on until I started wearing Swiftwick socks. Performance socks, never get blisters, and I've been wearing them for four years and have never gotten a hole in them or thrown a pair away. The old performance ones were boxy in the toe, but the new ones they just came out with are seamless in the toe and are incredible, the Aspire I think? They also make full compression socks that are half the price of any others that i've tried and are way better socks.
To me it's blisters vs no blisters.
I've got some Smartwool socks that I love but they're too expensive. Good for a Xmas gift tho. You can buy packs of good synthetic running socks by Nike or whoever from places like Academy for a decent price and they're on sale sometimes so I stock up.
