I don't pretend to know a lot about training, and today after a phone call with my brother, he was outraged that my coach made us do 800 repeats. He said it was way too early in the summer and that we would all be burned out by state.
Could anyone give me advice on the situation.
I ran 2:57, 2:54 and 2:48...our coach said that we were going to have around 3 minutes of rest, he specifically said that he wanted us to have plenty of rest so we wouldn't strain ourselves.
If this causes your brother to be outraged then he is a hothead, He is the last person you should be asking for advice.
If your best mile is 5:19, then running repeat 800s at 3:00 each during the Summer your coach definitely gets the SOM stamp of approval.
Listen to your coach.
FWIW, the rest should not be the variable that determines effort or strain, it is the pace. Take it easy.
