SA
Only he wasn't such a loser!
Geb and Aouita are pretty damn close.
1:49, 3:31i, 12:39, 26:22, along with 58:55 and 2:03:59.
1:43, 3:29, 12:58, NT for 10000
Geb didn't try the 800 but a couple of times, and Aouita never did a 10000.
ukathleticscoach,
Are you seriously calling Alan Webb a loser? Accomplishing your only dream in life, which for Webb was breaking the American Mile Record, which EVERYONE on this board thought would be IMPOSSIBLE.
He did it. He ran 3:46 when running 3:49 would have perhaps sufficed to cap-off the career of a prodigy.
You must think Paula Radcliffe is a piece-of-sh!t like most of us do, because at least Alan Webb is clean.
You have no right to have "coach" in your name and call an athlete a loser. Obviously, you do not coach athletes, and thank god you do not.
He's very close to Said Aouita in times. Aouita ran 27:25 for the 10,000 in 1986. The fastest time in the world that year. And also picked up a bronze medal in Seoul in the 800 and was a 1:43 800 runner.
He was the only one that could dominate in the 800 up to the 10,000. Think if Peter Snell, Dave Wottle, Juanterena, Coe, Ovett, or Cram in the 10,000. Aouita was ranked number one in the world that year by TnF News.
Like Webb his 10,000 was a one-shot deal. Why he ran it I'm not sure, other than to prove how awesome he was.
Actually the fastest time in 1986 was Mark Nenow's 27:20.56

That's right. Aouita was ranked ahead based on his defeating Nenow in his 27:25 debut.
I say Craig Mottram
He is pretty much a better version of Webb. Just as fast or faster but also a much better racer
Ha remembering when Webb ran those fast 5 and 10k times many years ago makes me think... WTF did he not stay with Salazar and just train for the 5k/10k...? Better shot @ a medal in those event with his wheels! damn no one running those events currently would have that pure speed. But no.... lets just run the 1500 and have it be a crap shoot the last 300 where almost anyone can f***ing win.....

In the documentary 'Arabian Knight" - he stated that he wanted to set world records from 800m - 10,000m. Not sure if he really meant it.

Mottram does not have Webb's speed, or that 2nd or 3rd gear down the last 100 or 50.
You don't think so? He's run 3:48 and medaled in the world champs. Must have pretty good speed, no? World champs are usually just kicker's races
Mottram has run --
3:33 - 1500
3:48 - mile
12:55
27:34
He also has very impressive 4:50, 7:32, and 8:03y marks. I doubt that he could have or will run 1:43 or 3:30, but I guess he ran 3:48y so a 3:30.9X should be possible. But 3:48.98 converts to 3:32.03 when using TaFnews' conversion. SO I would say Mottram has more impressive marks overall, but that Webb's marks show better range. As usual, who actually has or had better range at the peak of their career is a different question.
For those that are too young to know of him, Said Aouita has to still be the greatest ever when judged over 800-10,000m. Much can be learned by reading his wiki page, but realize this:
800 - 1:43 Olympic Bronze (withdrew from 1500 with injury)
1500 - 3:29.46 WR (Berlin, 1985) - second man under 3:30 - Bronze in Helsinki (1500m) 1983
5000 - 12:58 WR - Two WRs (Oslo, 1985 and Rome, 1987) - first man under 13:00 - Gold in Los Angeles 1984 and Rome 1987
10,000 - 27:26.11, July 1986 - beats Nenow who ran 2nd-fastest all-time that year and AR 27:20 - finishes race with spike wound and shoe full of blood and declares "The 10,000 is nothing!" - he clearly could have run 27:05-26:58 when you look at modern runners marks, you can see he could have been the first to go under 27:00.
Anyway, first runner to run the 800m under 1:44, the 1500m under 3:30, the 3000m under 7:30 and the 5000m under 13:00. Cram, Ovett, Walker, Coe, Rono and all the other WR holders and runners from the 80's were no even close.
here are some interesting posts from TaFnews' forum, some that have not been mentioned.

Though he's not one of the greats in world history, Mr Webb has shown a range from 800M - 10000M on par with (but not equal to) Mr Aouita's, though their PRs are not equally aligned.
Mr Aouita (Mr Webb)
1'43"86 (1'43"84)
3'29"46 (3'30"54)
3'46"76 (3'46"91)
7'29"45 (7'39"28)
8'13"45 (8'11"48)
12'58"39 (13'10"86)
27'26"11 (27'34"72)

Re: Said Aouita the greatest range?

I am impressed that Webb gets that close over the range. It's the 800m that gets rid of most contenders
Here's a few missing a key mark:
Komen:
3:29.46
3:46.38
7:20.67
7:58.61
12:39.74
Gebrselassie:
1:49.35i
3:31.76i
3:52.39
7:25.09
8:01.08
12:39.36
26:22.75
(+58.55 & 2.03.59 for half and full-mara)
Choge:
1:44.86
3:29.47
3:50.14
7:28.78
--
12:53.66
29:06.5
Mottram:
3.33.97
3.48.98
7.32.19
8.03.50
12.55.76
27.34.48
But there are no shortage of threads on all this...

Man I'm going to sound like I'm on mottram's nuts, but I think mottram definitely takes it between the two of them. They have identical mile/1500 and 10k times. Webb only has the 800m on mottram, but mottram hasn't run it so we don't know. But mottram's FIFTEEN SECONDS over 5k break the tie breaker. And the 8 seconds over 2mile. Of course, I realize Webb should be able to run those times based on conversion. The other tie breaker is that mottram is a threat and has medals, while Webb rarely shows up to race day.
Choge, komen, Geb, aouita, and bekele are definitely better than either of them
the 20 year gap between SA and AW has to count for a lot. When SA ran those times he was competitive with the best in the world and reasonably close to (or setting)the world record at all distances. 20 years later some of the events had moved on quite a bit.

I think you responded to the wrong thread.

When has Webb run an open 400 in under 48? Or relayed a 400 in under 47?

in the world i live in, 3:30/3:46 and 3:33/3:48 aren't identical... they're barely in the same ballpark...
