Yeah but mate, thats like saying if old Robby Wadlow (tallest dude ever at 8'11
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow
) hit the gym and got his turnover down to Tyson Gay'ish levels then we would probably see a sub 8 second 100m.
Fortunately not being idiots on this message board we can apply some kind of common sense reasoning and say that it is virtually impossible an 8'11 dude is ever going to be able to do this.
There are basically three types of sprinters out there
1) the Carl Lewis/Obadele Thompson/Frank Fredericks type guys who are tall, lean, with long rangey strides
2) the Tyson Gay/Maurice Greene/Ben Johnson type guys who are short, super powerful with short super frequent strides.
3) the guys "inbetween" like Powell, Gaitlin, Christie who weren't at either end of the extreme but had a fine balance of the qualities the tall lean guys have and the short ripped guys have.
And over time we have seen that really none of the three have a distinct advantage over the other - all of the types have held the world record and the progression of the WR has been slow and with similar incremental drops.
That is until Usain Bolt who decimated the WR with a seemingly unnatural combination of a Carl Lewis stride length and a Ben Johnson turnover. Because there is a point (obviously) where a tall guy will get to the peak of his pure leg speed (because of his stride length) and a point where a short guy will get to the peak of his stride length (because of his leg speed).
It's not possible to have it all. Where Bolt fits in I'm not sure. But I do have a hard time accepting that this guy appears to have the qualities of a Carl Lewis and a Maurice Green all wrapped in to one, given those guys obviously through-out their careers (on drugs or not) were most probably striving to achieve them themselves (Lewis a faster turnover, Greene more stride length) and eventually got to a point where they just couldn't go any further - a point which is a 3/10ths of a second slower than this guy
