In trying to improve my speed for the 5K, I made the mistake of increasing the pace of my track sessions. Every time this happens, my performance actually declines. Why is that?
I can run 16:00 for 5K at the moment, but would like to get down to 15:00.
Is high mileage at easy pace the answer? More tempos than what I already do? Cut out some of the anaerobic sessions in favor of "cruise" or "steady" pace work.
BTW, is this the same approach to take for the mile/2 mile? I have a hard time understanding, physiologically, how volume can make a runner faster, without actually rehearsing these paces in training.
And yet, like I said, the moment I start doing mile repeats at 5K pace or 200/400 at mile pace with short rest, my times get worst. Counterintuitive?
There was a thread on here talking about the resurgence of distance running in the US and how our success now is related to running higher volume and less repeats.
