Our 4x800 team is Runner A,B,C, and D. Runner A is our most talented runner and runs maybe 20 mpw and competes primarily for the 3200 (10:22). Runner B works hard all year about 50-60mpw, not much talent but is just as good as A because he works hard for it, he runs 1600 (4:43). C & D dont really do much and aren't talented, but they still somewhat try if that makes sense.
At districts Saturday, I had these 4 run the 4x800. 4x8 is the first event, Runner A had the 3200(2nd to last event) and Runner B runs the 1600(mid way through the meet). C and D were non factors in there races. Runner A would definitely move on, weak 3200 field, but Runner B would have to run good, had a decently stacked 1600.
Well 4x8 rolls around and Runner B is first leg. He jogs it in 2:38 the team comes in 5th. Top 4 advance. I'm pretty mad, so are C & D this was their only way to get to Regionals. Runner A could careless. But I'm mad at the principle of it. When I confronted runner B he said he just didn't feel like he could double and make it in his 1600, and he said he warned the team 2 weeks ago. I still don't think this is right, later on I found out runner C (who was most mad, was a Senior) finished the race screaming at runner A to run fast. Obviously he didn't put it all out there if he could still talk. Runner B says he would've of run harder if he felt the other guys put in the time at practice like he did. I think they work average maybe slightly below.
I don't know I'm at a loss this hasn't happened in my 14 years as a coach before.
By the way Runner B got 4th in the 1600 and advanced. Runner A was district champ in 3200
