I need some tough pool workouts to keep me in shape right now. After putting in too many miles for me (70) I have really bad shin and calf pain and i need to take time off. Right now I aqua jog 90 min a day and just make up workouts, but does anybody have some good ones? BTW i aqua jog with no belt and wear running shoes.
As someone who has been in the pool on and off since last October (let's pray it's not as bad for you as it's quite monotonous), I highly recommend the following from Pete Pfitzinger:
It's got detailed day by day workouts for running in the pool and is a 9 week plan. It sort of has you build up which I don't think you'll need as you shouldn't be in there for 9 weeks. Just start in the middle somewhere.
The thing with the pool is it seems hard for me to keep my pulse up but these workouts have you going kind of hard and doing intervals nearly every day.
the other thing about doing the intervals is that it makes the time go buy much faster. 1 hour is boring in the pool (especially if you don't have anyone to do it with). but if you only have to focus for 2 minutes at a time, it really helps.
PS. I've never done it with shoes. I would think that would make it very much like weights which would be hard to do on the quick intervals.
your telling me u walk out on to the pool deck in your swimsuit, lace up the shoes and jumpin into the pool and go to town!! is this commun practice among elite college runners or am i just retard boy.
rojo, thanks so much, thats plan looks helpful and yes pool running time goes slower than grass growing!
Retard boy, yes I just lace up my shoes and jump in. Although i get mean stares from lifeguards, i think wearing shoes helps simulate running more and its hard enough to get my heart rate up so this helps!
Damn, I'd sink like a rock if I didn't use a belt either that of I wouldn't be able to simulate a running for. You can take almost any land workout and put it to the pool. You just have to be able to judge intensity and take the time increments from the land and put on your hot little speedo and lace up your soggy shoes and hop in. Also if CD players are allowed in the pool area it makes it seem a little less monotonous
I use aquajogger runners that provide just the right amount of buoyancy and resistance. can't imagine wearing running shoes in the water for long "runs"
