I am a high school distance runner who has been managing patellar tendinitis for most of the year. Recently during track season it has flared up and I have been unable to run every day due to pain and swelling, so since I can only run a couple times a week I have to kind of pick and choose what runs I do because I need to stay in shape with as little mileage as possible to help the knee. Today, seeing as I hadn't run in a couple days and the knee was feeling pretty good, I wanted to accompany my teammates on a 400 repeat workout on the track. I was about to have my head coach give me the green light to do this when my assistant coach decided to tell me what to do. I told her that I wanted to try and run the workout because my knee was feeling good, and she agreed, but said I could not go any harder than 50%. Because I didn't want to waste valuable miles on a run that would barely be a workout, I asked if it might be more beneficial if I ran them all out like the rest of my team. This is when she flipped out and told me that was a horrible idea and my knee would never heal if I did that, but when I asked her why that was, she refused to give any kind of good reason. I told her that since my knee would hurt either way because I was running the same distance, she went crazy again and said that I was completely wrong. I understand that going all out probably means a little more pounding on the knee, but I still think that it would be more beneficial to do an actual workout the few times I feel good enough to run. So I'm basically asking; do I have a point, or should I have done what she suggested, and if so, why...thanks
