I like the first post!!! Eastern's a great school. Whoever wrote this post is right though. Trash talk has to stop about runners and coaches. Only can be done if somebody does something really unethical.

What a pointless comment. Who cares about spelling. Were not in English class. if thats was CMU that typed that, why are you the only ones making stupid comments.

When one completes a post defending their school's academic reputation, one would think the "poster" would proofread their post so as not to lose credibility by making basic grammatical errors.

I know there is way too much of this type of criticism going on, but critique is in order when someone writes about their school's academic reputation and makes an error that a primary school child would be scolded for.

I don't believe, while EMU is a fantastic example of a superior athletic program and I'm sure everybody is "real nice", that EMU is that great an institution of academia.

I realize this is a message board and rules of spelling and grammar are tossed aside(as I believe there is nothing wrong with); once academic reputation enters as part of an argument, you had damn well better know the difference between "their", "there", and "they're".

The EMU athletes are there to run, and they do a damn good job of it. Good luck to you at regionals and beyond.

Particularly when ripping on another's grammar, may I suggest you check your own post for simple errors. May I add that I've always thought it a childish move to call someone on his or her spelling on these boards. Who cares? If you can't beat their argument, then you attack their spelling. Certainly that clearly displays your superior intellect. In this case, the poster's argument was concerning spelling, as the original comment regarded academics. That would make all these remarks valid, in case somebody was out there just waiting to point out what might appear hypocritical in my statement. And by the way, ha, what do you mean, original EMU person, when you say that you are not asking, rather you are telling us all that EMU bashing needs to stop. That is strange. Maybe they don't teach the Constitution well enough at EMU. God bless free speech, except for those who think EMU is lame seems to be the sentiment. Peace.

Hey EMU prick. Get a life. You are not asking, you are telling? You must be joking. Are you 5? I am telling you, you are an idiot. Everything in your post only justifies all of the negative things people say about your program. It is funny how some people from EMU will get on here and "demand" that the Eastern bashing stop but then they will bash U of M or Central. I would guess that no one from U of M, State, or Central gives a shit about bashing your pathetic as program. All you are is a bunch rejects from good schools like Butler who were forced to join the only program that allows 28 year old ineligible foreigners to compete for them.

I have read some of these posts bashing John Goodridge and, after reading one too many I have decided to respond. I ran for John at Wake over ten years ago. He took me as a walk on as a 9:40 high school two mile guy and treated me absolutely equally to all the other guys on the team, which included several top 10 Kinney (now Footlocker) guys on scholarship. With a team made of all American guys (not that there is anything wrong with recruiting foreign athletes) we made nationals and finished 14th and 3rd in consecutive years. John was always professional, respectful, and truly cared about making everyone in the program a better runner. I wish him continued success at EMU

John Goodridge:

Having run for John for five years at Wake I'll try to give an objective take on all this madness.

1) I assume this last poster was Scott Hayward. I hope you are doing well.

2) Unless things are different at EMU, based on my experience (although not a walk-on) at Wake John treated walk-ons much better than at other schools. If you're decent, work hard, don't cause trouble and make good grades, you're in. We always had more walk-ons than NC State, for instance. The guys who did the above were treated fairly.

3) Something that no one has mentioned is that the article was written by the Eastern Michigan student newspaper. From a series of questions and replies they are going to pick the most inflammatory, given what happened!

4) John is not my favorite person, and has certainly pissed alot of people off, including me. He has a we win / you lose attitude that grows tiresome after awhile.

5) Looking back on the training programs, there was no consistency, which I believe led to improper peaking. I ran fast, and others ran fast, but it wasn't at NCAA's, for instance. But this point is much less of an issue to me than #4.

I too must add something positive about John Goodridge. In the mid 80's I was the head coach of a Div. I school in NC at age 24. The program was just being developed. I turned to many coaches to 'pick their brain' etc. John was easily the most receptive to this and helped me in any way needed including training philosophy, team unity, and recruiting among many other topics. He was very kind and generous to me in a situation where he had nothing to gain, and did not have be cooperative. This is not to say those bashing him are necessarily wrong, just that there are many sides to people and judging someone from one or two isolated incidents is very close-minded.

This spelling and grammar thing comes up frequently. First of all, you people who defend poor grammar and spelling are doing so because you obviously can't spell or write properly. Secondly, it is completely appropriate to comment on spelling and grammar when someone who goes on and on about how great their school is constantly misspells words. When there are such obvious and glaring mistakes in your post, it greatly takes away from your argument. You are trying to make a valid point right? If you can't write a complete sentence, don't know how to make a contraction or use an apostrophe, don't know the difference between plurals and possessives, don't know the difference between "their", "there", and "they're", perhaps you shouldn't be spouting off about how great your school is. There are worse things in life than being a bad speller, but you should expect to be called on it when you profess greatness when your post shows otherwise.

No they weren't.

Don't worry about it. Just run the races you know you can and there won't be much for the negative people to say. They will still write their assumptions about a program that most have had little or no contact with. Carry yourselves with class when you show what you can do at the last two meets and it will sort itself out. Go Hurons!
