Ran 8:59 in high school..In my 4th year of college, only ran 3:46 8:08 and 14:11 so far...I did alot of miles in high school, ran my a** off to get sub 9. Overall I am pretty happy with my progression in college considering how hard I ran in HS. Could be faster but much better off than alot of guys who have ran sub 9 and never did anything.
If your running sub 9 in HS and doing less than 55 miles/ week, expect to be a stud in college if you can stay healthy.
I ran 8:58 in HS. In college I overtrained and my stupid coach never noticed. He was too focused on the top 3. I thought I needed to run more. I hammered everyday and was doing 100+ MPW. After my freshman year I got slower and slower. I was fatique all the time. I ran a 14:28 5K and that was it. I eventually got discouraged my junior year and quit.
A guy from my hs (I think his name was Tagercamp, or something like that) he ran 8:53 in hs and ran 7:51 or so in college; I believe he has the American record in the 2 mile now (8:07), so I guess he improved quite a bit.

Nobody cares about the 17 year old who just ran 12:53. Why? Because he's not american, he's probably not 17, and well, the OP asked a question in which your answer gave no contribution.
There are tons of runners on here most people have not heard of, and did not become professional runners. Running sub 9 minutes in high school does not mean a darn thing in the long run.

Not true!! A number of states have never had a sub 9 HS runner. Many states have had only a handful or so. This after over 45 years that the distance has been run in every HS meet. Anyone who runs sub 9 in HS has truely reached a level of excellence in their respective state.

Sub-9 is a fast time for high school, but age aside it is not a fast time. If they never do anything with it after high school, I really don't care.

Exactly right!! You don't care. That's fine.
But these runners have earned legend status in their state. Yes even in CA where 100's have done it or a small state where only a few have done it. They are still HS legends.
good answers

Yep, half the states have produced 3 or less:
3 = IA, KS
2 = LA, NM, NV, SC, WV
1 = AK, AL, KY, ME, NE, NH, RI, SD
0 = AR, DE, HI, ID, MS, MT, ND, OK, VT, WY

147.
32% of the 453 done by US high schoolers.

Thank you. I still think of 100s as at least 200, but I understand that is technically, perhaps, not correct. I assume the 147 is for 3200, including converted 2 miles.
Hey guys I appreciate the info but can we stay on topic?
Listen, OP, we are the only ones keeping your thread from being buried on page 5 or something. What the hell are you talking about? I ran sub 29, but I was a late bloomer. I did not break 9 in hs. How many sub 9 people are you expecting to chime in when your thread would be buried in obscurity without those of us who dared to, according to you, not stay on topic?
