That is indeed an amazing race. Komen's 7:20, Bekele's 26:17, and Coe's 1:41 are my favorite of all time.
Komen has such a smooth stride too. It looks so natural.
It wasn't the training that caused him to run 9 seconds faster than Aouita.
In the other most recent Daniel Komen thread it talks about a workout he used to do with Bob Kennedy during race season in Europe. 1600, 1200, 800, and 400 with 3 min recovery jog. He was around 3:54, 2:53, 1:54, and 55 for that workout. So basically he could run a 3:55 mile casually in practice and keep running very respectable times for the rest of the workout.

I'd love to think he really was that good, but I'm convinced those silly times in the late 90's were down to EPO.
What did he do after 2000? Couldn't break 7:43 or 13:00, despite being only 24!

Watch the video of Komen running, he is possibly the most beautiful runner I have ever seen. Look at the guy he was born to run.
As for not being much good after 2000 that is true but it's quite a stretch to blame this on EPO or not on taking EPO anymore.
I met Komen once or twice and whilst physically he was a Ferrari, hell he was a Bugatti Veron? but mentally he was a neon. Komen broke he didn't have the intellect to be a super star. He couldn't handle the pressure and lacked the drive to push himself or understand that he wouldn't always be on top.
I have met several super stars over the years and on the occasions I met him he struck me as physically the most gifted but mentally the most lacking. He was a nice guy and like most Kenyans I have met, he was very genuine but I wouldn't think he would be much of a challenge at a game of chess.
Being a super star requires two main components a strong body and a strong mind, his mind let him down.

WAs an 8:54 steepler at seventeen at altitude. Steeple background helped his form and also with getting help from former wr holder kiptanui.

He just trained 3 x a day for shorter times. I asked him this question when we chat a couple of times. "Did you really train 3 x a day, Daniel, as it can be read in some online information about your training?" Daniel- " No, mostly I trained 2x a day. "

I know of experience it`s enough to reach individual top capcity on just 5-6 sessions per week,
and I have done great coaching for many runners on that low mileage. The only elite runner I have coached on 6 sessions per week is a Kenyan that already just did that before my coaching . I got him to run as a pacemaker in a big marathon and pass through 30 k at 1:32. He told me after he felt still strong at that point and probably could have finished in 2_09-2:10 . A single easy run of 70-90 min gives more aerob effect than doubles e.g 40 + 60 , and also more recovery.
All the elite runners I have coached ( except one) are used to do 2 x a day training and it won`t hurt their results because they have all day for their training and time to recover. With some of them I sometimes cut the easy morning run when they will do the main workout interval later on to get a more powerful and effective interval.
When a young runner I advice to first see what he/she can do on singles.
My experience after now 50 years as a national elite runner and a coach for five years is summarized in this sentence " To reach individual optimum capacity in running isn`t mainly a question of how many miles the runner does, it`s more a question of HOW the runner does the miles.... " - J.S -

What happened? The word is alcohol ...... lot`s of party and a lot of new "friends" . Same problem for many of the great runners ( e.g Henry Rono) .
