When looking at colleges something that I was concerned about it some of the schools I looked at only had one coach for 18 athletes for cross country, other though maybe had 2 or 3 for the mens and womens programs. Which actually might be even more insane.
Which do you think is better? for example Stanford has 1 head coach for men and women, while Villanova Women are coached by Gina and an Asst. seperate from men.
I don't think either is "better"
A good coach coaching a joined program with a lot of kids is still probably better for you than a mediocre coach focusing on just you and a few other guys. I'd say all else held equal I'd rather have a separate men's and women's coach, just so they can focus more on fewer athletes.
I think that, in general, separate by coordinated programs are better, but it depends on the personnel and how things are done. I also think that sharing some coaching expertise makes more efficient use of coaching talent and time. Of course, many schools have the teams travel together in both XC and track & field. I do not know of any that use separate facilities (other than the obvious).
