Maybe Dumb Question About Isaiah Koech

If Isaiah Koech can indeed compete in the Senior event, and you were in charge, would you ask him to compete in the Senior event if he were willing? I can see arguments for either option...However, it seems he is about as fit as anybody on the planet for 5000 meters, so I would guess he might do OK in the Senior event.

Bob Mathias won the Olympic Decathlon at age 17. As long as you are competitive, you should be able to compete against anyone. Whether you are 16 or over 40, it shouldn't matter. Winner takes all.

I believe he is scheduled to race in the junior event. My prediction is that he will not qualify for the team. He will be even lucky to finish in the top ten. Cross country running is different from running on the track. Back in 1997-1999 Daniel Komen, while on his world record breaking span, tried his hands on cross country. He got beat by a Briton John Brown then at world cross country 1999, he finished second. Haile too quit cross country after several beatings by Tergat and crew. Koech was discovered on the track(world youth '2009). On his only world cross showing, he finished fourth last year. kenya is not short of talent. His training mate David Bett, who did not run or rather make the Kenyan team last year, is doing very well. Also Nicholas Togom, who is Mathew Kisorio's lil brother will be racing. He is very good! If I were Koech's coach, I would have him retreat back to training camp and prepare adequately for outdoors in order to ensure he maintains the same killer shape or improve.

Tell that to Silas Kiplagat or Asbel Kiprop

Koech could fail to qualify for the junior team and still go to Spain - an AK official suggested he'd be a likely wildcard candidate, given that he just ran 12:53!

Peter Kimeli Some indeed is Kisorio's brother but Nicholas Togom is yet another even younger sibling and seemingly with a better future than the first two.

Please get a clue before you start tossing facts.

1.) ISIAH KOECH placed 4th at last years World Junior X Championships at age 16. (he is much stronger this year and you say he would be lucky to finish top 10 among Kenyan Juniors, your really, really stupid)

2.) At the start of the 2011 season Isiah destroy a talented group of Kenyan X-Country Junior hopefuls by over 1 minute!

3.) What the hell does Daniel Komen 1997 or any year have to do with this Isiah Koech who is a proven X-country talent?

Also I love how people say things like "Geb or Komen were never really that good at Cross Country." Um, Geb got THIRD in the long course at the World Championships, and Komen got SECOND in the short course at the World Championships. That seems pretty good to me...

Last I checked, Bekele is the best cross country runner of all time- no need to elaborate. His track credentials? Oh, too long to list. Yes XC and track are different, but it is more than possible to be the best at both.

You got my point. Koech does not seem to me to be Kenenisa type(where he is exta good in both cross country and track). He just wowed us in indoor track which shows his potential outdoors. But cross country wise, nah! If we are to go by his finishing at the last world cross, he sure is not exceptional in cross country running. Lets wait and see. It is only a few more hours and the results will be out. He may get a wild card to join the team even if he doesn't finish in the top six . Winning world cross will be another story. I want him to win but I am almost 100% sure he will not win. And I know if this happen, many people out here will start talking about drugs and doping. It is none of that. Some say he already beat some great junior athletes by more than a minute but unless he ran 21 minutes in an 8k cross country, that is not convincing enough. Try something else. Koech is from my home district and I have nothing against him but I have to be realistic in my expectation and many will agree with me come tomorrow after results announced and after world cross coountry champs is done.

Ritzenhein was not a junior in 2002. He was born December 30, 1982.

I way be wrong...but didn't Bekele win seniors world xc as an 18 or 19 year old??

The same year that he won the junior race at WXC (ahead of Ritzenhein in 3rd), Bekele also took second place in the senior short-course (4km) race. Obviously that sort of mixed junior/senior-level double is no longer possible since they did away with the short course event.

Or the other possibility is that he will actually win just as many might have guessed a 12:53 runner might do while competing against the best Juniors in the world. He won farly easily, or at least the outcome did not appear to be in doubt.

Bekele won the junior xc race in 2001 and then doubled back the next day to place 2nd in the senior short course race.

I believe that is the only senior world xc race that he ever finished that he didn't win. he was also 9th as a junior in 1999.

That was a joke! But seriously Kenyan champs are very unpredictable. You see Ebuya could not even finish and Leonard Komon, the fresh world record holder in 10k and 15k barely made it to top six. So my prediction was not far fetched. I wish Koech the best in the worlds.
