I have that article practically memorized because I had just started running recreationally that summer, and it was among the first issues I had ever bought. And I still think it was the most stacked marathon ever. Everyone who was anyone in the marathon was there- save for Steve Jones who had yet to emerge. I'm sure it had a lot to do with it occurring on the cusp of amateurism and big money/big city marathons luring the better runners away to better and more guaranteed paydays. It was even more true for the women- it being the first- and makes Joanie's win all the more impressive.
