My kid will be in school in the Boston area and I was thinking it might be fun to try a local race on a visit. I'm not really a marathon runner. Any recommendation for other local runs during the school year (anything from 5k to half marathon) that are open registration and fun? Thanks.

In terms of pure scenic beauty, Around Cape Ann for sure. It follows the rocky coastline of Gloucester and Rockport. I'll warn you that it's quite hilly, though. It doesn't have as much hoopla as the other races, but it is my favorite of the bunch.
I'll also give Boston Half Marathon special mention because you get to see a lot of the city when you run it.
You, sir, need to learn to respect the marathon.
