Are there any good recommendations for remote places in Southern California where one can backpack, pitch a tent and light a fire - essentially "going into the wild"? Obviously it would have to be suitable for this time of year.

head north into the eastern sierras. there are tons of trails out there.
The Angeles National Forest is closed due to the fires 2 years ago and most of the other forest have bans against campfires during the summer months. There is pretty good hiking trails around Big Bear (watch out for mountain bikes though). Best bet is to drive a few hours north up 395 to Mammoth Lakes or into Yosemite and enjoy backpacking around lakes and streams.
