Ya, it's not that impressive. Anyone who lifts a finger and actually studies has a 4.0 ... by actually studying I mean treating school as a 9-5 job.

thats interesting that a WOMAN excels in a field that is >90% male, as well as excelling at sport. Driven individual.

It is a little like Gwen Hardesty (later Coogan) who went to Smith without racing in high school (played soccer) and won the 3000m right out of the gate. While Smith is not MIT, she took off her junior year and went to Harvey Mudd (Claremont Colleges) which is every bit as good as MIT (graduates much higher proportion of PhD then MIT or CalTech). She then went on to get a PhD in math (number theory, I think) at Colorado while making the Olympic team in the 10,000. Her oldest daughter is pretty good, running some sub-5 miles and about 5:02 even as a freshman (HS).

Not to take anything away from Gossels -- comparing anyone with Hardesty is a very big complement.

While D3 may not have the depth of D1, it definitely still has some excellent runners (for example, anyone remember the MIT runner who ran a low 10 minute steeple last spring, she was also some sort of engineering major?) as well as excellent scholars. Congrats to Jennifer Gossels, a 4.0 as a math/computer science major is not an easy feat at all and extremely impressive.

Some people, both male and female perform at the top in multiple areas. Some people function at a higher level and enjoy succees at everything they attempt. It is especially frustrating for some of us. I think this is especially true with runners. How many times do you hear about high school studs who were also valedectorians of their h.s. class.
