So after watching Miles Batty rip that 3:55 mile the other day, I started to think about this. Its no secret that a lot of Mormons (and Im assuming most of the BYU team) don't run on sunday which probably means Miles only trains 6 days a week. On a side note, Bernard Lagat also refuses to run more than 6, as do many Kenyans due to religious observance.
Bernard Lagat: I just need more rest. I can’t handle it week after week after week without a day off. I normally train six days with one day off. Let me tell you: By the time I go back to work Monday, I’m glad I had Sunday off. I feel so fresh on Monday that I’m ready to train again.

BYU might not be the best team in the nation, but they are consistently great and have won 9 out of the last 11 MWC titles in cross. They also don't typically get the most storied recruits. I'd also say Lagat and the Kenyan population are pretty damn good at running... My point is this. Do we need more rest than we give ourselves? Do we need the physical and mental break? I know not all of the best runners take a day off every week, but is it possible it is necessary in reaching our full potential? Thoughts.
