Double gold in world champs, tons of American records. So F***ING CLUTCH.

Shorter was better
Shorter was born in Germany.
Don't forget fastest!!
To American parents, on a US Army base.
Lagat's double gold in 2007 trumps anything Shorter ever did, or any other American distance runner for that matter. Don't forget, Lagat has two golds, a silver, and a bronze in the last two world championships.

Why does the Army base matter?
Because technically an Army base is an American territory. Shorter = American-born, American
Lagat = Kenyan-born, American
Personally, I prefer those homegrown.
Seriously, who can top his achievements? NOBODY.
Lagat is one of the top 30 (maybe) best Kenyan runner (sic) ever.
ya think? He only holds 8 AR's.

Name the other 29 Kenyans to run 3:26.

Nobody. Mills, Shorter, Schul have the gold medal. Anyone with a brain knows no other American has ever been at the level of Bernard Lagat. Except one- Jim Ryun.

Yeah, Lagat would have DESTROYED Jim Ryun in a mile/1500.

Yes, BUT--
Bob Schul went into the Olympics as the world record holder at 2 miles, I believe.
Dave Wottle has an Olympic Gold and held a world record.
Jim Ryun has no Olympic Gold but held FIVE world records.
That's really the only basis for saying Lagat isn't the best American distance athlete ever. No world records.

Not according to the US State Department:
"Despite widespread popular belief, U.S. military installations abroad and U.S. diplomatic or consular facilities are not part of the United States within the meaning of the 14th Amendment. A child born on the premises of such a facility is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States and does not acquire U.S. citizenship by reason of birth."

Lagat ran faster times and beat faster people, Lagat is the best. Face it, you racist.
I really think Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson are better than Lagat for starters.
I could make a much longer list if took the time.
Lagat came to America already a top level runner. I know he holds American records, but if Haile came over to American and busted out a 2:04, would he be the all time best American marathon runner?
Don't get me wrong. I love Lagat and what he does for American distance running, but you can't deny that he was born and raised in Kenya.
