Im not a chemistry guy and I was on an interview at an environmental engineering company and I need the answer to this question.
Sodium cyanide in a dish is harmless unless it is combined with something (another chemical) to cause it to go into the air. What is that chemical or type of chemical???

Combining any acid with NaCN would form HCN, which is a gas at 26 C. That sounds like your answer
