So I'm a few years removed from college, running just 10-20mpw (as opposed to 60+) and I feel much better about my training/running/racing. A typical week the past few months would be this:
long run 8-12 miles
speed work (6x400m, 1'R)
4-6 mile run, maybe a little tempo in there, maybe some hill work, however i feel that day.
solid leg workout at my gym. exercises will vary here and there, but about 20-30 total sets, getting the quads, hams, glutes, abduct/adducts, balance, plyos. I'm spent at the end and am guaranteed a good night's sleep these nights.
I'm training for shorter stuff (mile/800). Ran a 4:35 last month indoors, and just ran a 4:32 this week.
Obviously the mileage is not a lot at all, but I think I'll try bumping that up to 20-25mpw consistently and see what that does. I have to say that my stride just feels a lot more powerful when I'm out there. Never did serious (consistent) weight training in HS/College, but I'm glad I'm doing it now.
I do believe that everyone responds differently to various training programs, but you just don't know unless you try!
