I understand the arguments for men's/women's races. But to have an exclusive race for one gender? The NYRR is a non-profit that received the state incentives for non-profits and is exempt from taxation.
How is this legal?

There was a kind of funny article in the NYT about guys who go around winning "women only" races, because I think legally they aren't allowed to restrict men, they just theme it for women(?)

Because the demand appears to exist for them? Also, for the top women in the race, it's certainly nice to have the opportunity to outright win a race once in a while.
I'm really not invested in women's races - I'd frankly rather have men to pace off of. But, if you can't have single gender races, then how do you have the olympic marathon trials, or any of your standard track races? It's clearly legally permissible.

I think thats a little bit different situation. I don't think I have ever seen a one-gender track meet. The individual races are for different classes, like having a JV and Varsity section, only for men and women. The trials are the same boat, there is a section for men and for women, and you have to meet certain guidelines to compete. One of those guidelines is that you must be of the appropriate gender.
I think women only races are fine, but it does irk me to know that I would NEVER be able to get away with a mens only race. If I hired a bunch of strippers to hand out the overly manly finisher medals, I'd probably get shut down, if not sued.
Probably is legal. If it were not, there would have been a class action lawsuit by now.
May depend on the jurisdiction. I believe that the Nike "Women's" Marathon in San Francisco is open to men precisely because the alternative would have opened them up to legal unpleasantness. They discourage men, but can't ban them.
This may also have come up in the Wall Street Journal article last year about men being booed for winning "women's" races.
In my city we have a Boys Championship Track meet and a Girls Ch.Meet on another weekend. The girls meet does invite any male officials while a number of the better women officials work the boys meet along with the invitationals.
I wonder if men were slower - would there be seperate races?

If I remember, I saw about 15 races that were Womens' only; I don't think i've ever seen a mens' only race. I to agree that this unfair.

It's low profile and not put on by a big group like NYRR though.

If you don't want to get your butt kicked by a woman, why don't you go become a Navy SEAL? No women allowed.
They have women's only running clubs too. Go ahead and try and join the Impala Racing team.
What an outrage that they have a male only race. Someone should do something!
