The race filled up quickly this year. He missed his chance.

The fact is a couple of things

First he can still run against the best somewhere else and pick up a pay check.

Secondly, Boston isn't even the best marathon in the US anymore much less the world unlike before. Yes it has some of the best tradition but it has gone downhill on the US and worldwide scene.

Finally, a marathoner can only do so many a year why would he choose not to do one where he can get paid well.

Why don't you go to work for 4 to 5 months day in and day out with a family to feed and see if it makes worth while for you before you ask someone else to do the same. Obviously, you are not in the sport so stop your nonsense. By the way, let me know whether you are willing to go to work for free for the next 6 months.

i don't see anything wrong with what the OP is saying. i mean maybe he doesn't need the "shame on you" part. but seriously, if meb wants to run boston, well then he can run boston. there's plenty in prize money, so he can go out and earn his money by getting a top placing. i think huge appearance fees are so stupid. they reward people simply for showing up. where's the competition in showing up? marathon appearance fee's are up 10 times what they should be. prize money is where all that money should go, make a deeper and larger prize jackpot. but sadly appearance fees rule the day cuz it means athletes dont' have to do well and they still get their paycheck. so thats not likely to change unless every single bigtime marathon unites and gets rid of giant appearance fees.
