I will be coaching high school middle distance runners this year because our previous coach got fired. I went to a clinic at Mt. Sac a few weeks ago to get some information and ideas about coaching middle distance runners.
The USC coach did his presentation on the 1500 meters. And he talked about how important this phase was and that a lot of high school coaches run their athletes too hard during this phase. He kept saying "capacity first, then progress to power". And then he said something about filling up the tank first.
My question is this. What does "capacity first, then progress to power" mean? Is he saying I should not do any strength work during this phase and just do mileage. I am confused. I had to leave the clinic early and didn't get a chance to ask him that question. Any thoughts?
