Although the medical community wouldn't recommend this, I adjust my sleep based on what I have to do the next day. Generally, I need and enjoy 8 to 8.5 hours, but I can do just about anything but a lot of reading or math with little or no sleep for one night.
My work has some days that I know in advance are filled with simple tasks. When those days are coming, I'll get about two hours sleep the night before, doing something of great interest to me that I didn't have enough time for, then just gut out the next day, knowing I got to do something cool the night before with 5-6 bonus hours.
I keep great shows or movies on the DVR for that bonus time, or read an interesting book in the quiet of the night with no one disturbing me. Sometimes, I use that time to fix something or get some chores out of the way so the next weekend is clear. Between some useful stores being open all night and websites up for all but an hour or two, you can get a lot of your bills, shopping, letter writing and phone calls done in an overnight.
I'd rather stay up all night Thursday night to free up my weekend for fun or travel, when I know I can coast Friday and get plenty of sleep Friday night. Now, middle aged, I get an hour or two sleep instead of none, because it helps me be more productive later the following day instead of wanting to crash in the early evening. Then, the second night, instead of sleeping 10-11 hours, I sleep 8-9 and feel fine.
