Hi All,
I've enjoyed a lot of the message board banter here for years, and now I have a question for you. Of course, I've checked this out with a few physicians, and I'm on my way to scheduling physical therapy. I just wanted other opinions from people who may have been unfortunately in the same situation that I'm in.
I'm 33, in pretty good shape, and enjoy running, cycling, and occasional weight-lifting. I ran the 200m and the 400m in high school (23.2/51.9) and didn't run in college. Since graduating from college, I've continued to run 3 to 6 miles with the occasional tempo workout in there for good measure. I was just trying to keep fit, enjoy running and stay moderately healthy.
At the end of the year, I went on a pretty hard run and came back and felt fine. The next day, I could barely move due to the pain in my lower back. I fell twice on the way to the bathroom out of the pain and went to a walk-in clinic to get checked out, since I was away from home. I had X-rays and an MRI. The MRI revealed "slight lumbar dengerative change" and the possibilty of a bulging disc. I was prescribed 800mg of ibuprofen, 50mg of Nucynta (a new Percoset variant), and a tapered dosage of Prednisone since I was having radiating pain in my leg. I'm off of the Nucynta, and am only taking the ibuprofen every other day now (nearly a month after the injury). I hope to start to some PT this week.
I've only gone running twice since this happened, and each time I had significant discomfort in my back. I've started some lower back exercises (cat, camel, plank, bridge, etc.) but I'm not sure that this is enough. I'm sure that I'll learn a few great things from the PT people (at least that's what I'm hoping).
Is this the end of running for me? Should I transition to cycling completely?
I am very afraid that what has been a very important part of my life will no longer be possible for me.
(and yes, I'm not elite, or sub-elite, or anything good at a local 5K, so don't bother with the flames; hopefully from the length of this post, you'll see that I'm only looking for serious replies).
Thanks!
