When I was at school any course without some farm gates to jump or a river to run through was considered soft. Nobody had a clue how long the courses were.

IMHO cross country courses should adopt something analogous to ski grades to lend some credibility to the sport. Maybe "double brown cowpie" instead of "double black diamond". Pretty soon people's natural competitiveness will lead to more "interesting" courses...
