Sports are not necessarily based on athleticism but rather fair competition with a clear with a winner chosen objectively rather than subjectively. Considering this running is a sport in its truest sense as the winner is simply the first one to get from the start line to the finish line. Also there is rarely significant intervention from referees, that is present in team sports, nor any rules governing technique, which are in place in XC skiing.
A proper list would include:
Boxing
Rythmic Gymnastics
Ski Jumping
Gymnastics
Diving
Wrestling
Figure Skating
NBA (fixed)
As the winner in these sports are decided by judges and not necessarily the performances of the competitors.
and arguably sports such as
Football
Basketball
Baseball
Hockey
Lacrosse
Speed Skating
Walking
As these sports are heavily governed by rule books and are closely monitored by referee who can have a significant impact on the outcome.

Sport is about competition, in which a winner can be objectively declared. This usually, but not always, is an athletic pursuit.
Competitions that are judged, like Gymnastics and figure skating, are not sports, but are most definitely athletic pursuits.
Athletic pursuits should not have a world championship or be in the Olympics, unless they are non medal events.

actually, anything track and field.
My definition is simple. If you can complete the following sentence without it sounding weird or not right, it is a sport:
Hey Mom, I am going out with Timmy and Tommy to play _______.
For example,
Hey Mom, I am going out with Timmy and Tommy to play soccer, baketball, football, tennis, volleyball, badmitton, wiffle ball, poker, darts, billards and so on.
What doesn't sound right:
Hey Mom, I am going out with Timmy and Tommy to play track and field, swimming, triathlon and so on.
So monopoly, hide and seek, hop-scotch, four-square, etc... are all sports?
You have your definition of sport and game confused.
If porn was a sport I'd be the world's greatest ultraendurance athlete.

Ergo running in general. If you think ultrarunning, racewalking, and triathlon aren't sports but cross country, track, and swimming are, you're just arrogantly kidding yourself...
Pretty much EVERYTHING in the X Games and Winter X Games.
Here is how that crap started with a couple of kids back in the 70s or early 80s.
"Hey, guys, want to go play some hoops or football or soccer?"
"No, we're not good at those sports at all, so we don't like to play them."
"How about going for a run or a bike ride?" "Are you kidding me? That's way too HARD! I have an idea, why don't we invent some wacked activities nobody's ever tried before and then we'll have "sports" that we're good at."
"Hey...I think you're onto something."
A few years later, we have the X Games, live on ESPN. And half that crap is in the Olympics now. Ugh.
Running is more of a sport than any other..

no it is not, it requires no athleticism. running is an activity that requires fitness or an activity used to becum fit, that's all
Can you give me some evidence that says that for something to be a sport, it needs a lot of 'athleticism'?
This is your opinion. Sadly, an opinion that is wrong.
I blame your parents for your self-centred beliefs.
Let's establish one basic ground rule: If you can smoke while actually playing the sport, it is not a sport. That eliminates golf, bowling, croquet, poker, table tennis, and billiards.
Diving is also not a sport, but it's difficult to smoke while falling and subsequently landing in a pool of water, so it's the exception to the rule.

Why?
Is this just another one of those personal opinions?
Again. It's the parents that are at fault.
