A still from that Olympic documentary with a backlit silhouette of Bikila running up the side of a mountain.
Mills sprinting down the home stretch with arms spread after he beat Clarke and Gammoudi(sp?)
I've always loved the shot of Banister crossing the line for the first sub-4 minute mile. But perhaps that has been a bit over used.
I like the Mills idea. I also think there are a ton of great shots out there of Zatopek, Viren, Geb, Joan B, Waitz, and more.

Or yeah, Bannister is classic:

I've always thought this is kind of iconic too from El G:

The two that imediatley come to my mind:
Roger Bannister breaking the 4:00 mile.
Abebe Bikila running barefoot to Olympic gold in the marathon in Rome.
An image of the Spiridon Louis water pot trophy from the 1896 games as seen at the top of the above link.
the sports illustrated cover of Ryun and Liquari hitting the homestretch side by side at I think it was the Penn Relas mile was quite a shot
Geb outleaning Tergat in 2000.
Paula Radcliffe squatting on the side of the road in Athens. Definition of iconic.

Yes. I would have a shot of the two of them, stride for stride, 20m from the finish line. The greatest Olympic distance race ever IMO.
Bannister's sub4 is a good choice. Lots of great shots of Keino, Geb or Joan Benoit as well.
Depending on your audience, you could use the shot of the start of the NYC Marathon on the bridge.

It would have to be something with Bikila or Geb. Those are the two most iconic distance runners in my opinion.
I would put in a picture of 20 east africans in a European track 5000.
East African dominance is the true story of distance running for the last 25 years. they have taken the sport to a much higher level, given the greatest performances, and been the most inspirational.
Putting Roger Bannister going sub 4:00 is probably the worst idea. Totally cliche.
Anything within the last 20 years wouldn't make sense either if you're emphasizing a true history of the sport. Go with a picture most runners haven't seen, preferably one from 1900-1950. Most runners are going to be more familiar with recent running, but much less so with stuff from the old days. It will make it more interesting.

The London Marathon goes through Athens?

A bunch of good ones to choose from there.
