I have lived in the boring 'ol midwest all my life. I'm looking to make a dramatic change. The East Coast is not for me, so I have settle on the West Coast . . . namely San Francisco, and not the Bay area, but the actual city.
I understand it is vastly more expensive. I am just hoping to break even here . . . kind of like an extended vacation.
I would really like to not have a car. Is this possible? What if I work in the bay area, is it easy to get to Oakland and Berkley through public transit? If I do have a car, is traffic bad?
What Neighborhoods should I stay away from? I'm looking to rent in the $1100 range. I'm not concerned about the size of space, but do want to live by myself. I'm young and want easy access to the most of what SF has to offer.
Any advice and concerns are welcome.
