Is it wrong to want the emaciated look. Mostly to lighten up to improve performance. Going for the Christian Bale"Machinist"look. 5'-5" now 140, want to be what I used to be 20 years ago 120 lbs.

Sounds like this guy does too.
Anyone who wants to look like The Machinist has major issues that go WAY beyond running. No good runner looks like The Machinist.
I heard Bale got down to 105 for that role, was shooting for 95 but the director stopped him. When I first saw him in that movie I thought it was edited. The weight loss/gains that DeNiro and Tom Hanks have done for roles has been celebrated but it's nothing to what Bale went thru....no way that didn't take years off his life.
The Machinest was a pretty good movie though.

One cup of coffee, half an apple and a can of tuna. That is all he ate a day for like 3 months. I think he stopped the apple and coffee after a while.
No water either.
I am not sure how one can will themselves into something like that, especially for a small budget Spanish film that wasn't even expected to do as well as it did.
With regard to Hanks, I watched Cast Away the other night and while he did make a major change, it wasn't anything totally dramatic. He just went from chubby to a healthy looking guy. He isn't THAT skinny in the end.
Bale is freaking nuts though. Not to mention that he went from that to his built physique in Batman Begins only a year later.
For those who might not be aware of the dramatic shift - here are two pics:

I was generally athletic when I became a "serious" runner and I lost about 20 pounds just because of the very hard workouts I did. I was still eating pretty well. I was gaunt enough. No athlete should attempt to be more gaunt than his natural workout regimen makes him.
The funny thing is most runners would say he looks too fat in the last-- and he's probably around 9-10 % body fat.
I trust most Bale fans have heard his rant on the set of Terminator. If not, enjoy. LOL
