I'm no expert in the climate or weather, but in my short lifetime winter storms seem to be getting larger and larger. Is this a sign that climate is changing? Are we on the verge of another ice age?
Holy Cow!

No, it is going to start warming soon. I predict within the next two months.

If climate was weather, we would have a zillion changes in climate. The variation in temperature/weather is greater over a month, much less a year, than what virtually everyone with an understanding of weather would agree is significant changes in climate (e.g., the differences in the highest temperature and the lowest daily high in a month is often 35 degrees or more, which is the average for Madison over the last 20+ years). A 35 degree difference in the climate would be very large (International Falls having weather of Oklahoma City or even Dallas or worse).
The upper Midwest and most of the US has had an upward trend in temperatures, especially in the winter over the last 40 years. Some of this is likely due to increased heat-island effects at weather stations. However, I have been modeling forecasts of next year's (or five years out) weather (e.g., heating-degree days -- HDDs) and estimates that use trends systematically out-forecast standard methods based on long-term averages, even when 'long-term' is only the previous 10 years.
I have not looked a a very large number of cities (more than a dozen but not too many more), but it holds for everywhere I have done the calculations (Portland, Denver, Austin, Kansas City, Chicago, Minneapolis, NYC (Central Park), Atlanta, ...) and I am not sure why other locales would be systematically different except for special cases (e.g., LA might officially be LAX, which is right on the water and the water is cool all year, so I would not expect a trend there, but further inland I would guess that it holds.

No, it is going to start getting colder soon, in the Southern Hemisphere. I predict within the next two months.
The environment is important to me and I voted for Ralph Nader of all people. But I honestly don't get climate change fears. Problem is, the climate is always changing. So yes, of course this is a sign the climate is changing. But so what? The weather is turning for the better in other places too. And I think there are self correcting forces in the environment that will kick in when things change.
This issue reminds me a lot of all the discussion of the value of the dollar and people who fear that the our currency is going to collapse. Sure, the value of the dollar is going in that direction. But when it goes down enough than you stop buying from China, you reduce the trade deficit, and produce more things at home. Yet people ignore this and extrapolate the national debt in a straight line towards a currency collapse.
I wish we would get back to the old fashioned environmental issues of breathing bad air and having nasty chemicals in our ground water.
ITS YOUR GLOBAL WARMING! NOT YOUR SLIDE OFF TO ..CLIMATE CHANGE! Global warming Global warming Global warming.
Here is real deal.. Bill Clinton, Hillary and Gore sat in the White house with a plan. Bill 8 years president. Then Gore 8 years president. Then Hillary 8 years president. That was the plan. Sweet Lord.
Exactly! I am your lord! Pray to me and pray to Obama! Then vote for him. You will see who are the lords of this country one day.
Must be climate change. You would never see a picture like that 100 years ago. :-P
Yes, what is getting larger is the media coverage of "weather"
I don't watch the news but I was over at my parents last night and they were watching the local news. The news spent 28 minutes talking about all the ice and forthcoming snow only to take 2 minutes to report a couple murders. In nice weather, they take 28 minutes to graphically describe the murder only to take 2 minutes to report the weather.
Whoa, easy on the Tea, brother.
So honest question. Do people not get the basic, VERY simple difference between weather and climate because:
1) They really are that unbelievably stupid OR
2) They don't want to OR
3) They get it but a lot of others don't so they still use daily weather as an argument against climate change
I am legitimately curious.
