A man goes to college. He wants to run track, or wrestle, or swim, etc. and he is told he cannot because they can only have 25 men on their roster. This number is not the coaches choice. It was mandated by the AD who is afraid that the Federal Government is going to come in and tell him he is not in compliance with Title IX.
Meanwhile, the same coach is running around campus BEGGING any woman with a pulse to "come out" and "join" the team. I didn't say "try out". I said "come be on the team".
The young man may have some ability. He may be able to contribute and be a productive part of the team. The young woman may not be able to chew gum and walk at the same time and her chance of getting over a bar, to the sand, or finish an interval workout may be nill.
Now...I have gotten off on a rant and that is what this subject does to me. To get back to the original question...will someone ever challenge title IX. I mean REALLY challange it. The spirit has been lost and the road to compliance has punished one group to advance another. It is not fair and it has become a numbers game.
If a person can get into a University and wants to participate he should be allowed to do so. What is the mission of intercollegiate athletics within a University setting? Now I know it has changed. I know that the mission has become make money and control those "minor sports" and make sure they don't cause any trouble and are in compliance.
I can promise you this...if Title IX affected football or basketball in ANY way (and it really hasn't) some high powered lawyers would be involved and this law would be challenged in a big way.
