Post-nuptial shut-off thread aside, I'm in my third year of medical school in California and have been dating my current girlfriend for about 6 months. I'm 30, she's 26. After next year I'll likely be moving for residency (possibly to the east coast). My girlfriend and I are very serious, and I know that she considers me marriage material and has thought about being with me long term. We've discussed - without going too overboard given the relative infancy of our relationship - the possibility of her following me when I go on to residency, and she says it's something she would certainly be willing to do.
In about 14 months I will actually know where I will be headed for residency. My question is, is a relationship of a little over 1.5 years (~20 months) too short to consider proposing? Obviously I don't know that I'll necessarily still feel like this about her at that time, or even if we'll still be together, but I have a strong feeling that we probably will still be going strong at that time. All other factors aside, is this a crazy thing to consider? I know that she would be more likely to 100% agree to come with me if she had a guarantee that I was committed to her for the long haul.
What say you, Letsrun?
