Anyone want to help me decipher this?
Background info: Results for runner I coach...had first iron test Dec 17th...runner was new to race specific training in 2010.
Mileage climbed from about 45-50 a week on her own (Before March 2010), to about 68 a week since (counting tapers etc.)
Oct: Had raced well, dropping 2 minutes of HM time in 6 months
Nov:Felt a little tired in workouts but not too bad. Ran another HM and was about 90 seconds off PR time. Didn't feel abnormally tired and mostly attributed the time to the conditions (low key race, probably about 25 degrees F at start)
Dec: Had her take a blood test after the season just to get a reference point for the future. Have only been coaching this athlete for 6 months but I should have had her tested right away....
Here are the results from December 17...the normal ranges are in brackets.
Hematology:
WBC 7.6 (4-10 giga/L)
RBC 5.22 (3.8-4.8 tera/L)
Hemoglobin 149 (120-150 g/L)
Hematocrit 0.46 (0.35-0.43)
MCV 89 (82-98 fl)
MCH 28.5 (27.5-33.5 pg)
MCHC 323 (305 - 365 g/L)
RDW 14.6 (11.5-14.5 %)
Platelet 213 (150-400 giga/L)
Ferritin 11 (15-180 ug/L)
Obviously the ferritin level was a concern. Had her start taking a liquid iron supplement.
Now here are the recent ones:
WBC 4.6
RBC 5.45
Hemoglobin 146
Hematocrit 0.46
MCV 89
MCH 28.6
MCHC 320
RDW 14.7
Platelet count 217
Ferritin 8
Currently in base phase running 70-80 miles a week. I had hoped that because most of it was on the treadmill that foot strike hemolysis would be minimized. But even after iron supplementation the ferritin and hemoglobin still dropped 3 points in 1 month.
Advice, suggestions? Currently in base building phase with some moderate tempo work done about marathon pace or slightly faster. Just started doing some speed reps...300m long rest etc........
My plan was to stay in base phase until the iron levels came back up..but is it time to just cut the mileage down dramatically and cut the moderate tempos out and just wait for the numbers to come back up?
She says she still feels fine and is running her easy runs and long runs at similar paces and effort levels as before. I think some of the LT pace stuff was becoming a is a little harder than normal in Nov, but not dramatically.
Really appreciate any information or advice anyone has,
Thanks!
