Yes, the beard truly does need to be brought back in distance running. I'd be okay if he shaved or trimmed it for the full marathon, though for the sake of speed.

Agreed. I like the look. Definitely nailing the free spirit mountain man look. Kind of like in Castaway when Tom Hanks, previously an overweight pasty-white guy, appears in the "1.5 years later" shot, all lean & bearded and spear-fishing.
He's trying to look like his favourite fictional character.
You know after looking at it for a second it doesn't look bad on him.
Then again I wear a long beard in the winter so consider the source...

Agreed. I always find it kinda weak when people show up super cool for the press conference and then back to their boring selves for the real deal.
