Brett Gotcher says he's way ahead of where he was last year when he ran 2:10:36 in his marathon debut. I think he is capable of running sub 2:09, and better.

Well that aint gon' happen.
His 1:02:09 half PB from '09 predicted a 2:10:31 marathon, so he was pretty close with a 2:10:36 in early 2010. To run 2:08 you would expect him to have run 1:00:57 for the half. His best half of 2010, 1:02:50 in Sept, predicts a 2:11:57.
The '2:08' in my post above is 2:08:00. A 1:01:25 would predict just getting under 2:09. But I don't think he's close to that either.
with the africans not being able to run due to visa problems, 2 things happened for gotcher.
1. his chances of winning went way up.
2. his chances of a fast time (sub 2:10 for him) went way down.
Only his group knows his fitness, but if he goes out even-keeled around 1:04:30 and has a companion through 30k, he may just get under 2:09. I've got to think that's his goal, beyond just breaking 2:10. Not sure about the weather though.
Weather looks pretty good; partly cloudy, mid-to-upper 50s, light southerly winds.

I don't have the answer, but wish him luck. It would be cool to have another US guy comfortably under 2:10
he has now beaten bob kempainen's credentials on the track (on stanford's website gotcher had 8:14/28:59 vs. kempainen's career pr's of 8:00/28:23, but currently gotcher's pr's are 13:56/28:09) but not in the half, and he does have kempainen's amazing ability to translate relatively slow track times to tremendous marathon times. I don't know if it's going to be now but I think that he may have that 2:08 in him in the next few years.

And in Boston, in the 90's. Quite a big hit.

7th place they had heavy winds at their backs, everybody in the top group ran huge personal best:s
On a day with a huge tailwind and on a course that is shorter than the one run today.

I know. I ran it too.
Although Kempenien was tough (1988 trials) he is perhaps the most over rated US Male Marathoner of all time. He was not as good as any of the Olympic qualifiers from the last 2 trials. He ran one fast race on a short course with a tail wind.
