Do you think that if I go around my city asking for donations to help pay for my tuition, do you think it would work?

I think it COULD work, but this is very dependant on the manner in which you ask/suggest the donations. The best method may be going door to door late at night, wearing dark clothing and a mask, while carrying a small firearm. When you ask/suggest you should also cleverly point the firearm and ask in kind of a rough voice. If they choose not to contribute it is up to you what the next move should be.
