Junior High PE class
Pre-School, eating glue.
I was living at my Grandparents short term after my mommie threw me out :) I always think about my Grandma on this day, she's 91 now, I'll give her a call. It was a sad day.
To be honest I was watching He-Man and really put off because Channel 9 interrupted my show to discuss the Challenger.
It wasn't until kindergarten the next day that it was really explained what had happened and I began to understand why He-Man was interrupted - not entirely though :/ He-Man was pretty important then.
I was in my dorm room at university, with the TV on in the background. Wouldn't normally watch a space launch, but this was on TV, so I saw it live. Knew right away something went horribly wrong, but the scale of the distaster took a while to sink in.
RIP Challenger crew.
Now I'm sad. This thread sucks. :-(
Experiencing the commotion from my mother's womb.
I was in high school spanish - the principal actually came into the room with an ashen face and told us. It felt similar to when John Lennon was killed a few years earlier - sort of a 'huh? the grownups messed up again?' feeling.
College cafeteria of my Soph yr.
5th grade. We were watching the launch on TV. A previous poster is right, this thread sucks!
I was in high school history. I had just won a tiny Casio pocket television, and was watching it in the back of the class. When the news came on, I blurted out, "The space shuttle just blew up." Had to show them the 2 inch black & white LCD before they'd believe me.
I still have that TV, but I digress.
RIP, brave souls.
In 6th grade, watching the shuttle disintegrate before our innocent eyes on T.V.
I was in high school. I left study hall for some reason and saw my basketball coach in the hallway. He had just watched it in the library and told me. At first I was just relieved I wasn't in trouble with him for being in the hall. Then I waited for the punch line thinking he was joking. It didn't take long to realize he was serious.
We had a road game that night in Goshen. I felt inspired and scored a career high six points. For those few moments I was able to rise above the tragedy and give people something to cheer about as we won that game. All my points came in the second half. I was glad to have done my part. Really, that should be a 30 for 30 story about rising above the adversity!
Hard to believe it's been 25 years since Christa McAuliffe told her husband, "You feed the kids. I'll feed the fish!"

I also was in high school spanish, although there were rumors about something going on at lunch right before.
I was in high school.
The class clown walks into the class room and yells out "the space shuttle just blew up!"
The teacher, knowing about his pranks, glares at him and hollars at him to sit down and stop causing trouble.
But he insisted it was true and sounded genuine.
A few minutes later the principle came on the intercom and made the announcement.
We all sat quietly thinking "wow, we first heard this from Greg Furr."

I was an engineer who worked on the design of the crew module flight deck for the space shuttle. I was at work. We were devastated. The shuttle was our pride and joy. It was our job.
On my way to a college biology class. Professor sent everyone home. I'll never forget his exact words - "The space vehicle has exploded."
I remember walking back to my apartment in the bitter cold, in disbelief.
Taking my drivers test for my license. Awful to have to tell the DMV worker what had happened as i tried to pass the test.
