Yifter seems almost programmed to lean at the line, no matter the margin of his victory.

Viren beat that in 1972 (after falling down), and in 1976 he beat all of the best 5000m runners in the world.
Viren has been the world record-holder in both the 5000 and 10000. Yifter has never held a world record. He has also beaten every 5000/10000 WR holder he has faced. Yifter has been beaten by Viren and Puttemens in the 10000, and Liquori and Quax in the 5000.

He also had a 13'13PB compared to Viren's 13'16 & also in that '79 race he beat 2 guys who went on to eventually record 13'07 ( Ryffel ) & 13'10 ( Kunze ) & made them look like boys running against a man
here are brief clips of yifter's classic 13'13pb win in '76 when he came within 0.9s of the WR in a real race not a time-trial :
it's 4'04 into the video & lasts couple of minutes :

I actually agree that Yifter in '76 probably beats Viren, but ventolin, by your logic one could argue that Viren beat a guy who went on to run 27:17, which doesn't really mean that much considering it was 8 years later...

That was 1977, not 1976. And in 1977 Liquori and Quax both beat him at Zurich that year, and it was Zurich that determined the order of the world rankings NOT Dusseldorf.
1977 World Rankings
1. Marty Liquori
2. Dick Quax
3. Miruts Yifter
4. Nick Rose
5. Karl Fleshen
6. Samson Kimobwa
7. Dave Fitzsimmons
8. Manfred Kuschmann
9. Suleiman Nyambui
10. Filbert Bayi
Yifters rankings at 5000
1980 1st
1979 1st
1977 3rd
1975 8th
at 10000
1980 1st
1979 1st
1977 3rd
1975 6th
1973 3rd
1972 3rd

I forgot something Eldrick, "[they, Liquori and Quax] made it look like men running against a boy."
How does that sound to you?

Any clips of 1977 Weltklasse?
I really don't think Yifter had any interest in rankings & I'd bet good money his aim for the season was World Cup & not Zurich ( he was from a communist country & they prized titles more as sign of "superiority" of their political system )
He lost in 13'16 to Liquori in Zurich, but that is him beating the same Liquori in 13'13. It's not Yifter's fault Liquori couldn't handle the pace when Rose started surging.
