What can you tell me about living there? Where to run, major races, winter, summer, etc.

All I know is that it rains a lot there,
It's a long ways from Juneau, but I've heard spectacular things about this event:
That's pretty cool. Will you be living in an igloo?
Not if Al Gore has anything to say about it.

It'd be pretty hard to live in an igloo in a place where there's only one month a year where the average high temperature is below freezing.
If you are a mountain runner you will love it. You will probably have to fly up to Anchorage to run good races though.
You can thank CO2 for that as well.
Lots of trails in the summer. Lots of xcountry skiing in the winter. Basically you can only run on the main road in the winter. Wear bear bells and carry bear pepper spray. Sometimes the main road running is out due to avalanch, but its usually up and running in 1-2days at most.
Its a totally awesome place, but very tiny. Its tucked in between the ocean and the mountains, and is very skinny (with one main road as I said) in most places. The mountains have glaciers, so you can't drive anywhere except locally.
As a side note, landing on the airports there and in sitka etc. in a 737 from seatle is one of the most terrifying experiences I've ever had. The runways are build out on the water with rubble and are just wide enough for the landing gear of the planes, and are very short for a 737. You cannot see land, only ocean when landing and it looks like you are going to crash, only to slam into the runway extremely hard and the breaks and jets are on reverse and you are thrashing around in your seat. (you take off directly at a mountain, which is also fun, missing by a small margin)
Juneau has a great trail system when the trails are melted.
Douglas Highway and Glacier Highway are the main roads; they get a lot of snow removal maintenance during the winter and early spring. Fritz Cove, The Back Loop Road, The Glacier Spur Road, and Thane Road provide good variety for the road running. Thane Road is the only road that gets affected by avalanches.
You don't need to carry a bear bell when running. Avoid the trails before sunrise and after sunset during the summer and fall months if you're concerned about bears.
Juneau has a vibrant running community. Check out their web site at
for more information.
I can tell you that is the capital of Alaska!
PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT HOMEY!!!!!!

You're either a liar or just plain stupid. It's Alaska he's talking about. Juneau is in Alaska. Look it up. Of course it's freezing ya dumbass.
Nice climate, incredible scenery, and you're getting closer to Willow Palin. Sounds hot to me!

1/10
This is good info. However, I've had the crap scared out of me by a bear in the middle of the day out by mendenhall glacier (brown bear too). I suppose you get use to it if you live there, or get eaten.
There are not any brown bears in the Juneau area.

Find Geoff Roes. Train with him.
Yes, it is rainy there.
Yes, there is a great running community and trails.
No, it is not cold enough there to live in an igloo.
No, it is not the fault of global warming that you can't live in an igloo there - it is the Pacific Ocean that keeps it moderate.
Geoff Roes became the (arguably) the best American ultra runner training there, although he does not live there anymore. He recently moved to Nederland, Colorado.

OK, I did look it up, I'm right.
