Most elites "lose" 2-3 weeks due to illness or injury during a four month build-up. Those who are lucky enough not to, often wound up burned out.
It takes a long time to train for a marathon. If you lose 2-3 weeks with an injury you will not be in your best shape (PR shape) by race time.
I am also sure he told him to do a track workout. What I am sure he didn't tell him was that if the outdoor track was covered in snow you probably shouldn't head to some small rink-dink indoor track and run 7 miles of intervals when you haven't run on an indoor track in a really long time.
Alberto I am sure told him to do the track workout.
