I have a 12-year-old son who has been doing some running on his middle school cross country team and the occasional 5K. He started struggling with running recently and we discovered that he has exercise-induced asthma. He now takes Singulair and an Albuterol inhaler, both of which help. He has also learned to really warm up well before beginning any fast running.
I'm wondering whether other runners out there with exercise-induced asthma can offer words of advice on how they have dealt with the condition. It's one thing to talk to a doctor, who can suggest what medications to take, but it's another to hear from runners who have actually dealt with the issue themselves. Obviously, the problem can be overcome (see Paula Radcliffe). I'm trying to do whatever I can to help my son get to the point where he doesn't have to worry that he'll be gasping for breath every time he goes out for a run.
