Pretty good field lined up on the men's side..
Krupicka
Jurek
Koerner
Gingerich
I am going to say Gingerich...the course suits him better than it does Jurek, Krupicka and Koerner

Will there be a gun to tape live web-cast ?
Hopefully Gideon's Bible awaits them at the finish line.

How so?
I saw what Zach Gingerich did last year at Umstead and it was pretty sick. Umstead is more technical and has more hills than RR does. Koerner and Krupicka seem to do better on hillier courses. Jurek would have have to be a pretty strong contender. He runs well on trails and flats.
I think Anton will pull it out. Leadville has taught him about pacing and he is hungry after having missed out on the fun at NF50. If he can subject himself to a reasonable taper he's my favorite, edging out Zach.
Jurek is just not there in the leg speed department and though it is 100 miles, he seems better suited to the 24 hour to 135 range, but he'll be strong
Hal K had a tough year, DNF's at WS100, Leadville and NF50. Gotta be feeling some pressure to get it rolling.
I'll go with:
1. Anton
2. Zach
3. Jurek
4. ????
Koerner - DNF
I think that it is going to be a battle for sure, esp. Krupicka (PR 13:32 for 100 miles @ Rocky Raccoon) vs. Gingerich (PR 13:23 for 100 miles @ Umstead). Will be interesting for sure, lots of competition up front.

This is going to be an interesting race. There are a lot of really good runners are signed up for this. Also Meltzer is running it as well. He is in his forties but still kills it.
Does Anton shave his legs?
It is weird how hairy Anton is but his legs look butter smooth. Kinda weird.
I agree with you on Gingerich. Go Zach.
Isn't this race supposed to take place up in dem dar Black Hills of Dakota?
That's the Black Hills 100 near Sturgis.
Is this a fast 100 then? It seems most of them are run in the mountains.

I am not an ultra guy, hell not even a marathon guy, but I live in Raleigh and run at Umstead. How is Umstead technical? It is run on a loop of the bridle trail, so basically like running down a dirt road. Great footing, no rocks, no roots. It is hilly, but not compared to a mountain trail.
Rocky Racoon must be pretty tame if Umstead is more technical and hilly?
So last night we got this message from the RD...
Dear Rocky Raccoon Trail Runner,
I wanted to send you a note with the major details, and also some things you just need to know. I'll go through a few of my pet peeves first, then get into the major race details.
1) NO HEADPHONES, IPODS, or any other electronic device that plays music is allowed to be attached to you while you run. I WILL DISQUALIFY ANY PERSON CAUGHT WEARING ONE." (The list goes on with about 20 more things)
Before I signed up for this race, or any other race, I checked the website (and the race rules) to see there was any mention about not being able to use ipods/headphones. Nothing.
So now I have shelled out money for plane tickets, hotel, etc and I get this email a week before hand telling me no ipods. Is this a knee jerk reaction to having an "elite" mens field or is the RD saying this just to appease any "insurance" issues?
I use headphones on my long training runs and do use them during 100's that I run..I don't know too many people that don't during a hundred, for that mattter. If you look at photos from last year, many of them have visible headphones on. (Yes, I get that race rules can change from year to year.)
Thoughts?
That sucks. I listen to music in my ultras, and I'd be disappointed. I'd still do the race, of course. You'll get by.....no worries.
Weird about the headphones but there does seem to be a ton of runners that will be running on a 20 mile loop. It might be best for safety. I remember last summer on a 2 loop course I came up on a woman with headphones on. She veered right on front of me when I started to pass and scared her to death on accident. She proceeded to cures me out because she did not hear me coming.
Anyways on this course I understand the reasons for banning Ipods.
