Not to hijack the thread, but technically it would be the 10000m. If you had said that in your topic title, the intent would be clear. 10k is for cross-country, roads, etc.
As for my own input. I've only run 30:56 for the 10000m, and the pace certainly didn't feel fast enough to warrant spikes. I ran in flats and felt fine. If I were in sub 30 or sub 29 shape, maybe my preference would be different. At least for me, 3 minute kilometer pace is too slow to "require" spikes.
