This relates to something I read in the thread about Alberto's training of his runners.
The OP in that thread said that Alberto had done an amazing job (or something to that effect) with Galen.
Actually he hasn't. Or at least not yet. I think there has evolved a myth on this board about Rupp and Salazar. People seem to think that Rupp's success comes from having wealthy parents and having the luck that a great coach in Salazar took him on at an early age and he could afford underwater treadmills, etc.
Here is the story of how AS started coaching Rupp. AS knew the soccer coach at Portland's Central Catholic HS. He offered to give the soccer coach some training programs for the soccer players. Its while they were discussing this that the soccer coach mentioned that one of his players was running through the workouts amazingly fast. Not sure what exactly he was doing but it was so fast that Salazar couldn't believe it. The soccer player was Rupp, one thing led to another and AS offered to coach him.
The upshot is that what Rupp has achieved owes a lot to him being an extremely gifted runner. Its not some situation where Rupp's parents had connections to AS or could buy a world class coach for their son. Nor was it luck that he found AS. It was more luck for AS that he found Rupp. He's not just some above average runner who has gone far beyond expectations because of an amazing coach.
If anything Salazar has underachieved with Rupp so far. But that is almost entirely deliberate on AS' part by keeping his mileage down but keeping Rupp healthy too.
Not defending or cricizing anyone here. Just that over time on this board it seems a lot of posters have gotten a false idea of where Rupp is coming from as an athlete.
