Does anybody have any experience with GERD or severe reflux? Mine flares up horribly while running and I'm struggling because of it.

I have a pretty severe case and it used to bother me quite a bit on runs. I tried basically every over the counter remedies but none worked so I got prescription for Nexium. Take it every morning right when I wake up and I haven't had a problem since.
I don't know if I have acid reflux but on a lot of my runs I get nauseous, spit a lot, and it feels like I have a lot of congestion in my throat and stuff. Same thing?
If you drink coffee esp. before a run - stop it

One of my teammates in high school did the same thing- didn't have problems after he got prescription medication.
I had some problems for a while, it eventually went away when I changed my diet to less acidic, and less fatty food. I took Regulin (prescription) before my longer runs for quite a while. Be careful taking Nexium for long term ... one of the side effects is bone loss and brittle bone ... (http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/osteoporosis/causes.html) talks about it in terms of osteoporosis in women, but I have seen this discussed before as a serious side-effect over the long term.
"Other Medications. Anti-convulsant (anti-seizure) drugs increase the risk for bone loss (as does epilepsy itself). Other drugs that increase the risk for bone loss include the blood-thinning drug heparin, and hormonal drugs that suppress estrogen (such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and aromatase inhibitors). Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), may also increase the risk for bone loss and hip fractures. These drugs include omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), and esomeprazole (Nexium)."

Bone loss from those drugs is questionable at best. One chart review study suggested it, while several more recent and specific studies showed no effect. The theory involves lower acidity preventing ionisation of Calcium (to a degree) to make it absorbable. To remedy this (if true), you would simply have to supplement some calcium OR take your calcium with food, for it is absorbed through a different mechanism that way.
nexium or similar. if you only get reflux when running (like me) you might only need 1 pill every 3 or 4 days so i wouldnt worry about bone density
there was another thread on this recently with useful comments.
Pop a couple tums before you run, that's what I do. The only times I notice even a hint of heartburn are at the end of my 2 hour runs, around 3 hours after i've taken them, but it's not bad. They're loaded with calcium too, so that's a plus.

I have this problem too. It's not acid reflux. I think it's an allergy of some sort. I've had bad acid reflux, and this is different. It only happens outside, not while I'm inside on my treadmill. That's why I think it's an allergy.
