I've done long runs on a 150 meter track before and it's not bad. If you're going hard, you can't appreciate scenery anyway. The nice thing about the track is you can just hit your rhythm and go. You also don't have to carry any fluids with you.
Does anyone carry fluids with them?
I always wear a Camelback of Gatorade while I'm running 1.5 miles on the 1/8 mile track at the gym. Dehydration is very dangerous. I do have to take the Camelback off while I'm working on my guns on the weight machine.
Whatever people wanna do with their own time is fine with me, but seems like race ideas are getting dumber by the day.
My gut is that the popularity of running is peaking for now. Usually when ideas start to get really lame, the end of a trend is in sight.
The first rule of indoor marathons,
is
YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT INDOOR MARATHONS.

Well ultras are starting become a hot new trend since marathons and triathlons don't hold the allure they used to. After those and inside starts to fade, I think you are right.
It's funny that so many people think you gotta go 50K or 50/100 miles now. As if a marathon is somehow a short distance. LOLZ at that one.
